A baby step into the Quilter's world

Been sewing for about two years now. Can't say that I've accomplished very much. Have mostly made clothes for K. And she doesn't really complain about the stitches being crooked or that the seams do not meet so I've generally had quite a smooth learning journey. Have steered clear of mammoth like projects like quilts cos in my mind, I've never quite understood the need for them, at least in our household. Down duvets are so nice and comfy. Why would there be a need for quilts?

It all started when I finally got down to attending the two free sewing lessons from Brother that came with the purchase of my machine, which I never signed up for. I got to know this nice lady who told me about the quilting lessons that she went for and the things that this same store sold. I decided to go take a look at this place at Tan Boon Liat Building.

I was introduced to the various lessons that they conducted and was very interested in machine applique and machine quilting. I've done some appliques but they haven't turned out too nice so I decided to sign up for these two courses. It was fun and I've learnt alot from the ladies who attended the same courses as me.

After the two lessons, I decided that I would put my new knowledge to good use and make my mum a mother's day present. I decided to make a wall quilt for her. I looked for something simple and something which I thought I'd be able to complete in two days. I found this free pattern by Lucy Fazely.

Using whatever fabric I could find from my stash, I made this. I enjoyed the free motion quilting (beige background) very much. It was a little scary at first but I thoroughly enjoyed this project. The 3D flowers and bugs took the most time to make. But I think I would be taking on more wall quilting projects. What fun.

Home transformation

With baby on the way, we could no longer ignore the fact that some parts of our house was looking more like a storage dump that a functioning room. After much thought and consideration, we decided that we need to finally put in some more needed cabinet space so we can put baby in our third bedroom, instead of in the living room.

After many weeks of stress and packing and moving of boxes around the house, enduring the noise of the renovation and then cleaning up AND unpacking, we went from this:

to this.

And for the third bedroom, my work space went from this:

to this.

All in all, we are happy with the transformation but we very clearly need to learn not to hoard and how to let go of things. And our cabinets, that the ID guy and carpenter said would definitely give us ample space or in their exact words, "we would never run out of storage space", well, we have run out of storage space. Clearly, they have underestimated us. And clearly, we're still learning to hoard less and let go.

Father Dot

We pray with K every night before bedtime. She now tells us when we miss out someone. Her usual pray request is for us to pray for so and so to be "not sick".

Three or four weeks ago, she said her first prayer.

"Father Dot. Pray Gong Gong and Mama not sick. Amen."

Yesterday, she insisted that we hadn't prayed for Gong Gong and Mama again. We did but she was very busy talking while P was praying. She also has a tendency to list a whole long list of people we "haven't prayed for" to push back time to sleep.

So I told her that she should pray then.

"Father Dot. Pray Gong Gong and Mama not sick. (In) Jesus' (name). Amen."
